  1. The SIGGRAPH 96 Conference Proceedings CD-ROM offers links between Adobe
  2. Acrobat PDF files and QuickTime animations supplied by the paper authors
  3. as supplemental electronic documentation.

  5. In order to successfully view these QuickTime animations from within
  6. Adobe Acrobat Reader on UNIX platforms, additions must be made to two 
  7. files, ".mime.types" and ".mailcap", which associate specific file 
  8. types with applications which can open them. If these files exist in 
  9. your account, they are likely to be found in your home directory.
  10. If these files do not exist, they should be created.

  12. The following steps outline the configuration needed to view QuickTime
  13. animations from within Adobe Acrobat Reader on UNIX platforms:

  15.   1.  Install the "xanim" application found on the CD-ROM.
  16.  
  17.   2a. If you have a ".mailcap" file, add the following line to it, 
  18.       starting in column 1:
  19.  
  20.         video/quicktime; xanim +Ae +f %s
  21.  
  22.   2b. If you do not have a ".mailcap" file, create it in your home
  23.       directory and place the following line in it, starting in column 1:
  24.  
  25.         video/quicktime; xanim +Ae +f %s
  26.  
  27.   3a. If you have a ".mime.types" file, add the following line to it,
  28.       starting in column 1:

  30.         video/quicktime<TAB>mov
  31.  
  32.       (press the Tab key once where "<TAB>" is written above)

  34.   3b. If you do not have a ".mime.types" file, create it in your home
  35.       directory and add the following line to it, starting in column 1:

  37.         video/quicktime<TAB>mov
  38.  
  39.       (press the Tab key once where "<TAB>" is written above)

  41.   4.  Define the following environment variables:
  42.  
  43.         $EXTENSIONCAPS=$HOME/.mime.types
  44.         $MAILCAPS=$HOME/.mailcap
  45.  
  46.       If your ".mime.types" and ".mailcap" files are located somewhere
  47.       other than your home directory, the value of these environment 
  48.       variables will be different, to reflect the true location of the
  49.       files. The examples above reflect the files being located in your
  50.       home directory.

  52.   5.  Launch Adobe Acrobat Reader.

  55. Adobe Acrobat file located in the "Help" directory installed during the
  56. installation of the Adobe Acrobat Reader application. A likely path to
  57. this file is: "/usr/adobe/AcroRead_2.1/Help/MapTypes.pdf".
